Is your bank account ready for DBT payments? Government subsidies — LPG, PM-Kisan, scholarships, pensions — reach you through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT): money paid straight into a bank account that is seeded with your Aadhaar in the NPCI mapper. If the seeding is missing or inactive, the payment simply fails, and the money never arrives. Checking your status takes two minutes and is worth doing before you need it. This is an independent guide, not UIDAI, not NPCI, not any bank.

Quick facts

  • What "Aadhaar seeding" means: Your 12-digit Aadhaar is mapped to one specific bank account in NPCI's central mapper — that account, and only that account, receives your DBT payments.
  • Seeding ≠ KYC linking: Your bank can have your Aadhaar on its KYC records while your account is not DBT-linked. Two different databases.
  • One account rule: Only one bank account per Aadhaar is the active DBT recipient at a time. Seed a new account and the old mapping is overwritten.
  • Check it at: NPCI's BASE portal (base.npci.org.in) → Check Aadhaar Seeding Status, or UIDAI's myAadhaar portal → Bank Seeding Status, or dial *99*99# from your Aadhaar-registered mobile.
  • Cost: Free everywhere — checking and seeding.

What "Aadhaar seeding" actually means

Here's the mental model most people get wrong. When a subsidy is released, the government doesn't send it to "your bank account" — it sends it to your Aadhaar number through the Aadhaar Payment Bridge. NPCI's mapper looks up which bank account is currently mapped to that Aadhaar and routes the money there. So the question is never "is my Aadhaar linked to my bank?" (that's KYC, and nearly everyone has it) — it's "which account does the NPCI mapper point to right now?" If you opened a new account last year and seeded it, the mapper points there — even if your old account is the one you actually use. Old or closed accounts hijacking the mapper is the single most common reason DBT payments "disappear."

How to check your status (2 minutes)

Method 1 — NPCI BASE portal (official mapper): Go to base.npci.org.in → Citizen → Check Aadhaar Seeding Status → enter your 12-digit Aadhaar and captcha → verify the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile. The screen shows your mapped bank name, mapping status (Active/Inactive), and last updated date — straight from the central mapper.

Method 2 — UIDAI myAadhaar: myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in → Bank Seeding Status → Aadhaar + captcha + OTP. Same data, government of record.

Method 3 — USSD: Dial *99*99# from your Aadhaar-registered mobile. No internet needed.

If it shows "Inactive" or "Not Found," you're not DBT-linked — fix it before your next subsidy is due. The detailed walkthrough is in how to check Aadhaar-bank linking status step by step.

How to seed your account

Only your bank can update the mapper — NPCI doesn't seed accounts directly. Online: most banks let you seed through net banking or their app (look for "Aadhaar Seeding" under Services), or through the bank's no-login OTP seeding page; you'll need the OTP on your Aadhaar-registered mobile. At the branch: ask for the Aadhaar Seeding Consent Form (Annexure I), fill in your account and Aadhaar numbers, attach a self-attested Aadhaar copy, and keep the acknowledgement — processing takes 2–7 working days. Important: ask specifically for NPCI/DBT seeding, not just KYC linking — branch staff sometimes do the latter and call it done. Online seeding typically reflects in 24–72 hours with an SMS confirmation. Full guide: how to seed Aadhaar with your bank account for DBT.

Common failures and fixes

  • "Aadhaar already linked to another account": The mapper points elsewhere. Seed the account you actually want — the new seeding overwrites the old.
  • Payment not received but status shows Active: Check whether the account is frozen, dormant, or has failed KYC — the mapper routes the money, but a dead account can't receive it.
  • OTP not received: Your mobile number isn't registered with Aadhaar, or there's a UIDAI server issue. Update your mobile at an Aadhaar centre first.
  • Name/DOB mismatch: Your Aadhaar details don't match bank KYC records. Fix whichever document is wrong — Aadhaar via myAadhaar or an enrolment centre, bank via a KYC update form.
  • Seeding failed at bank: Often an e-KYC authentication failure — try branch biometric authentication if OTP-based e-KYC keeps failing.

Scam warning

DBT seeding is a favorite pretext for fraud: "your subsidy is blocked, share your OTP to unblock it." Rules: seeding is always free; no official ever asks for your OTP, PIN, or CVV; check and seed only through the official portals, your bank's app, or a branch visit. Treat any message threatening to "freeze your account" over seeding as a scam — banks don't work that way.

No internet? The USSD and offline options

Not everyone has a smartphone with data, and the system accounts for that. Dialing *99*99# from your Aadhaar-registered mobile queries the NPCI mapper directly — no internet, no app, just the USSD menu. It shows which bank your Aadhaar is currently mapped to. For seeding without internet, every bank branch does it: walk in with your Aadhaar and passbook, ask for the seeding consent form, and specify NPCI/DBT seeding. Many banks also offer seeding via SMS or ATM menus. The offline routes take longer (2–7 working days via branch), so if a subsidy deadline is approaching, the branch visit should happen this week, not next.

FAQ

My Aadhaar is linked to my bank. Why didn't my subsidy arrive?
Because KYC linking and NPCI-mapper seeding are different things. Check the mapper — that's the one that decides where DBT money goes.

I have three bank accounts. Which gets the DBT?
Whichever was seeded last. Only one account is the active DBT recipient at a time.

How long does seeding take?
24–72 hours online, 2–7 working days via branch, with SMS confirmation.

Can I change which account receives DBT?
Yes — seed the new account and it overwrites the old mapping.

Is there a fee?
No. Checking and seeding are free on all official channels.

Bottom line: DBT money follows your Aadhaar, not your account number — so make sure the mapper points where you think it does. Two minutes on the BASE portal now beats a missing subsidy later.

My LPG subsidy stopped coming last month. Could a broken Aadhaar seeding be the reason?

Very likely — same thing happened to me. The status check on the UIDAI site showed my seeding had gone inactive.

Go to your bank branch and ask them to re-seed it in the NPCI mapper. Mine was fixed in a week.

Is the seeding the same as linking Aadhaar for KYC? I already gave my Aadhaar to the bank years ago.

No, different thing — the guide explains it well. KYC linking isn't enough; the bank has to register you in the NPCI mapper separately.
